Nazareno Costa, born on 08/06/1990 in Italy, holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Messina in the field of Sciences, Technologies, and Safety of Animal Productions (L38). His education has provided a solid foundation for his career as a veterinary technician.

He has received training according to art.23 of Legislative Decree 26/14 for functions A, B, C, D acquired at IZSLER through theoretical modules outlined by the DM (Decree) of August 5, 2021. This training includes legislation, ethics, basic biology, and the use of animal models such as rodents and lagomorphs (Mice, Rats, and Rabbits), fish (Zebrafish, Poeciliidae, Medaka, Nothobranchius), ungulates (Swine, Small Ruminants, Camelids), and large ungulates (Cattle and Equines). He also holds certifications in specific modules such as ethics and project design, advanced breeding practices. He gained practical training for Rodents (Mice and Rats) at the University of Naples Federico II (Appropriate basic and adequate biology, Humane methods of euthanasia, and Minimally invasive procedures without anesthesia) and practical training for small ruminants at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (Appropriate basic and adequate biology, Humane methods of euthanasia, and Minimally invasive procedures without anesthesia).

He has various certifications for participating in webinars and training courses to acquire skills in animal welfare, refinement, and pathological endpoints.

Furthermore, he completed a voluntary internship at IZS Sicilia, acquiring skills in managing immunocompromised colonies and safe animal handling.

His skills include the management of Haccp, Brc, Ifs protocols, and business management protocols, with certifications obtained from Riconnexia.eu.

Work Experience:

Currently, Nazareno holds the position of Animal Care at Fondazione Ri.med in Palermo, where he is responsible for the housing and ethological management of laboratory animals, ensuring the compliance with proper housing and handling practices.

Previously, he collaborated as an intern at the Laboratory of Ethology and Animal Welfare (Department of Veterinary Medicine – University of Messina), focusing on the study of animal welfare and breeding conditions of medium-sized animals.

Language and Digital Skills:

Nazareno is a native Italian speaker and has a good command of English (B2 level). He possesses advanced digital skills, including independent management of email, the use of the Office suite, bibliographic research, and programming in C++.
